Roaches, Mice, Sewage, And Food At Unsafe Temperatures Close Area Restaurants

This week's restaurant report exposes emergency health closures at restaurants in the District, Virginia, and suspensions in Maryland.

WASHINGTON, D.C. (WUSA) - This week's restaurant report exposes emergency health closures at restaurants in the District, Virginia, and suspensions in Maryland, where after last week's storms, officials say they shut down three restaurants for continuing to operate even though, there wasn't any power to keep refrigerators on --- leaving food at unsafe temperatures.

Three Maryland restaurants operating without power

At Maryland Seafood and Crab, 3751 Bladensburg Road, Brentwood, MD., inspectors ordered the restaurant closed until it could show receipts proving it had purchased and replaced out of temperature food with safe properly refrigerated food.

Prince Georges County officials say they also shut down Golden House Chinese Restaurant, 6211 Belcrest Road, Hyattsville, MD., after the storm and China Express, 3671 Bladensburg Road, Brentwood, MD., both for operating with no electricity and food at unsafe temperatures.

Wendy's operating with sewage backup

In Annandale, VA. a complaint brought inspectors to Wendy's, 7042 Little River Turnpike, where officials found sewage bubbling out of a grate in the parking lot.

Health officials say sewage can cause many illnesses and restaurants are required to shut down operations themselves and fix the problem.

In this case, the health department ordered the restaurant closed.

"If that's the case, I'd rather not come here to eat anymore," said Wendy's customer Mary Stewart-Malcolm upon hearing of the violation.

"But still, it's not going to stop us," said Wendy' customer Samia Ali, saying she likes the restaurant regardless. "Yes I do."

District closures include mice, roaches, and no toilet

In the district, officials closed Ana's Wholesale Deli after finding flies, roaches, and mice.

Inspectors suspended the deli inside the Benning Market BP too reporting the food was stored next to chemicals and workers there weren't allowed to use the toilet.

All the restaurants cleaned up, passed re-inspections, and are now back in business.
