Rally for Israel held at Freedom Plaza in DC

Mayor Muriel Bowser and Maryland Gov. Wes Moore both attended the rally Friday

WASHINGTON — A rally in support of Israel took place Friday at Freedom Plaza in Washington, D.C. Among the guests for the rally were Mayor Muriel Bowser and Maryland Gov. Wes Moore.

Security around the DMV was ramped up ahead of the rally because a former Hamas leader called for a "day of rage" or a "day of Jihad" in response to Israel's retaliatory attacks and air strikes. While law enforcement tells us they have not received any credible threats, they are making their presence known across the Districts and places of worship.

"Did we let Hamas deter us from showing up today? No! " Ron Halber the JCRC Executive Director told the crowd of hundreds.

More than 20 speakers addressed the crowds.

"Religious Jews, secular Jews, right-wing Jews left-wing Jews, young and old , we are all sitting Shiva," said one of the speakers.

The focus at Freedom Plaza is to support Israel after the terrorist attacks last weekend.

It was also to call for an end to Hamas.

"So if you stand with Israel, you stand against Hamas," said Maryland Governor Wes Moore.

"I condemn Hamas. I'm going to tell you, I'm a proud Muslim and I am here to say not in my Allah's name. Do not kill people in my Allah's name," said Anila Ali, with the American Muslim & Multifaith Women's Empowerment Council.

Throughout the week, we have been closely following how people across the DMV have been affected with loved ones trapped or locals trying to come back home. There have also been several vigils and rallies in response.

The history between Israel and Palestine is complicated, nuanced, and layered. But Friday's rally, called Stand For Israel, is a sign of solidarity as leaders are expected to denounce Hamas once again. It is expected to be a time for prayer and calls for peace.
