Columbia, SC (WLTX)- The night of the Orlando massacre, was the day of Darryl DJ Burt's masters graduation. He was among the 49 victims.
Darryl Roman Burt II, or DJ, graduated from Keller Graduate School of Management on Saturday June 11th. He had his parents and brother in town from Indiana to celebrate the big day.
They were supposed to leave by Sunday, but DJ never made it back from Pulse Night Club.
DJ's godparents tell News19 they received a call from DJ's parents asking for prayers because he was missing in the midst of a mass shooting. Those godparents, Diane Lemon and Marion Lemon, now say they want DJ to be remembered for his accomplishments and cheery smile.
"He was a caregiver, because he worked at the college as an administrator and helped veterans enroll in school" said Marion Lemon.
DJ also attended Claflin University in Orangeburg from 2005-2007.
DJ's parents sent family and friends a photo with the quote, "we refuse to let the hatred of others steal the joy of our child."
DJ's body is being flown to Virginia, family's home state, on Friday.
His burial will be on June 25th and the Burt's are asking for people to wear blue in his memory, since blue was his favorite color.
