'Meals on Wheels' services not interrupted despite fire to catering service building in Alexandria

Officials at Meals on Wheels in Alexandria say thanks to time and dedication from volunteers, no one has missed a meal.

ALEXANDRIA, Va. — Josephine Mossman and her husband have been getting Meals on Wheels deliveries for the last two years because it's tough at 79 years old.

"I'm not driving as much so I like to go to the grocery store, but it's easier if the food is brought to me," she said.

So when she got a call this week, letting her know there was a fire at the warehouse, she wasn't concerned because she knew volunteers would pitch in.

"I got off the phone and I thought – I bet all of these volunteers that deliver the meals – if they can, they're going to come in and help and they'll get their act together and they did," she said.

The 85 staff members who prepare those meals are all working in different locations - at least for now. The volunteers are still doing their part, according to Ashley Johnson, who is the long-term care coordinator for the Division of Aging and Adult Services in Alexandria.

"They have not stopped volunteering. They are still volunteering even with our contingency plan," Johnson explained.

Those meals are important for Josephine and her husband, especially with the chance of a storm this weekend.

"I was thinking – what can I fix if the electricity goes out? And I thought egg salad… tuna salad… and what did we get today in our lunch? Egg salad, tuna salad," Mossman exclaimed.

She says knowing they are taken care of - no matter the circumstances - is what matters the most.

"It's great to feel that we're a priority," Mossman said.
