Google to invest additional $1 billion into Virginia data centers, add 2 workforce development programs

VIRGINIA, USA — Artificial intelligence and an infusion of funding were just some of the takeaways from Friday's press conference with Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin and Google CFO Ruth Porat.

The tech giant announced a $1 billion investment into the company's existing data centers in Virginia -- two in Loudoun County and one in Prince William County -- as well as $75 million in workforce development programs.

Google said the $75M AI Opportunity Fund will give grants to programs that will help more than one million Americans learn AI skills. Separately, the AI Essentials course will help people integrate AI into daily work.

“Google’s announcement today (Friday) of a $1 billion investment in our Virginia data centers brings our total investments across the state to more than $4 billion," Porat said in a prepared statement.

Gov. Youngkin, meanwhile, lauded the investment, which now amounts to more than $4 billion overall poured into the state.

“Google’s ongoing investment in Virginia is a testament to our state’s skilled talent, robust infrastructure, and leadership in advancing the development and application of emerging technologies," he said.

The company's data centers power popular products such as Google Cloud, Gmail, and Google Maps.
