MANASSAS, Va. — The president and vice president are bringing their 2024 campaign message of reproductive freedom to Northern Virginia on Tuesday.
President Joe Biden will be in Manassas on Tuesday afternoon as he runs for reelection in the November race. Abortion rights is a top issue for Democrats in an election expected to feature a rematch with Donald Trump, the former Republican president.
Vice President Kamala Harris will share the stage with Biden at the rally, and First Lady Jill Biden and Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff will be in attendance.
The president's and vice president's focus on reproductive freedom comes a little over a year and a half after Roe v. Wade was overturned by the U.S. Supreme Court.
Former President Trump helped pave the way by nominating three conservative justices to the court during his term. He recently said he was proud of his role.
“Proud that women across our nation are suffering?” Vice President Harris said in Wisconsin on Monday. “Proud that women have been robbed of a fundamental freedom? Proud that doctors could be thrown in prison for caring for their patients? That young women today have fewer rights than their mothers and grandmothers?”
The questions from the vice president came during her own kickoff of a nationwide "Fight for Reproductive Freedoms" tour, which she launched on the 51st anniversary of the Supreme Court issuing the Roe v. Wade decision.
At the Manassas event, Biden will "underscore what is at stake for reproductive freedom in 2024—including the threat of a MAGA Republican-led national abortion ban—and President Biden’s commitment to codifying the protections of Roe into law," according to a campaign media advisory.
Not everyone is happy about Biden's visit to Northern Virginia -- or his message.
"Democrats cynically believe that celebrating unrestricted late-term abortion-on-demand is the best way to appeal to voters," the Republican Party of Virginia said in a statement. "Republicans will continue to be advocates for mothers and children, including the unborn, and strongly oppose Democrats’ utter contempt and disregard for innocent human life."
Biden and Harris will speak at the Hylton Performing Arts Center in Manassas around 4:30 p.m. WUSA9 will have a crew at the event.
If the president travels to the event by car, traffic impacts should be expected along his route, which would likely include I-66.
