WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- The dedication was called a homecoming ceremony and it was the final step in starting over at the Navy Yard now that all 2,700 employees have returned to building 197.
The Naval Sea Command Center reopened in February. The last of the workers moved in at the end of March. The building has undergone a multi-million dollar renovation including new paint, carpet, work spaces and a brand new entrance.
The only sign of the mass shooting that claimed 12 lives September 2013 is a memorial space at the old entrance with a water feature and 12 lighted boxes bearing the names of the victims. But the memory of that tragic event proved to be too painful for some who retired or were reassigned. Ongoing counseling is available to all employees.
The dedication took place at 11 a.m. on Monday.
