BALTIMORE, Maryland (WUSA9/MDTA)-- E-ZPass users beware!
E-ZPass is warning customers in Maryland and Virginia about an email phishing scam.
The Maryland Transportation Authority warns that there are phony emails out there requesting E-ZPass users to pay their toll debt online.
"Under no circumstances does E-ZPass Maryland ever request personal information via email," says the MDTA. "While E-ZPass Maryland periodically sends marketing emails for upcoming events, projects or surveys, the agency will never send an unsolicited email demanding payment or requesting sensitive personal information such as credit card information, social security numbers, user names, passwords, etc."
MDTA and E-ZPass say the emails going out right now are "phishing scams" in order to obtain personal information and they should be ignored and deleted.
If you get such an email from anyone saying they are from E-ZPass Maryland, you should not open or respond to the message. Instead you should call the E-ZPass Maryland Customer Service Center at 1-888-321-6824.
