'It was so loud and so disturbing' | Residents react to street takeover in Prince George's Co.

Witnesses said they heard cars spinning and engines revving late Saturday night into Sunday morning.

CHEVERLY, Md. — Tire marks can be seen at the intersection of Landover Road and Kilmer Street in Cheverly, Maryland after witnesses said a large group of people and dozens of cars gathered there Saturday night into Sunday morning for a street takeover. Witnesses tell WUSA9 they heard tires screeching, motors revving, and even fireworks.

“It was so loud and so disturbing," said Karen Reed, who was staying nearby. "Monster trucks," is how she described the noise coming from outside.

A viewer video shows cars and crowds blocking the busy intersection.

Reed said she was watching her grandchildren when a roaring noise came out of nowhere.

“It would wake you up, because the kids were scared, the children were scared because they were like, grandma what’s that noise?” said Reed.

Another neighbor said this is the second time this group has gathered here the past few months.

"All the neighbors are coming out, everybody’s coming out," said Carlos Cruz. "Some of the neighbors, they do get mad. They’re a little bit older, ‘hey, this is crazy’. They want the cops out here and everything.”

“People will come out of their house like, ‘oh look what’s going on’, because it’s here and then they just go," said Shannon Okoronkwo who witnessed the street takeover. "They pile in really fast and then they just, they’re gone.”

Some said they aren’t bothered by the takeover. Others wouldn’t like to see it again.

“I wouldn’t, because it’s disturbing," said Reed. "You can’t sleep. You’re thinking that somebody’s going to crash because that’s what it sounds like.”

“I don’t really care, honestly," said Cruz. "They can do what they do as long as nobody gets hurt.”

Witnesses tell WUSA9 police arrived after the intersection was cleared.

We reached out to police to see if any arrests were made, or injuries were reported, but have not heard back.
