Police find dog wandering Montgomery County trail

Police say the dog appears to have been outside for a while.

DERWOOD, Md. — Park Police in Montgomery County are hoping to reunite a lost pet with its owner. The large dog was found wandering a trail near Lake Needwood in Derwood, Maryland late Monday night.

The police department posted a photo and video of the pup on its social media pages overnight.

"He’s very thin and appears to have been outside for a while, but he is very friendly," the police department said in the post. The found dog has been released to the care of Montgomery County Animal Services and Adoption Center while the search for the dog's owner continues, police said.

If you recognize this dog, contact Montgomery County Animal Services and Adoption Center at 240-773-5900. The shelter is currently at capacity and only taking in dogs who need immediate help. In response to the current population crisis, the animal shelter is waiving adoption fees until further notice.

The Humane Society of the United States reminds pet owners to take steps to prevent your pet from being lost.

"A lost pet has a better chance of being returned to you if they always wear a collar and an ID tag with your name, address and telephone number. To further ensure that your dog makes their way home should they ever become lost, ask your veterinarian or local animal shelter to microchip them. Just be sure to keep your contact information up to date with the online microchip registry site," the Humane Society says on its website.
