The 17-year-old Great Mills High School student who shot and killed a 16-year-old and injured another student at school died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office confirmed Monday.

Austin Rollins entered Great Mills High School just before 8 a.m. on March 20th, firing a single shot at Jaelynn Willey, 16. The gunshot also struck another student, Desmond Barnes, 14.
Rollins continued down the hallway and was confronted by the School Resource Officer Blaine Gaskill. Rollins fired a fatal shot into his head at the same time that Gaskill fired a shot into Rollins’ weapon.
Willey later died of her injuries. Police say that Rollins and Willey had been in a relationship that recently ended. Rollins used a gun that was legally owned by his father.
