LA PLATA, Md. (WUSA9) -- Funeral services were held Tuesday for Maddie Major, the brave, young girl who lost her battle to leukemia last week.

She was the little girl with Leukemia who in 2013 scolded Congress for shutting down the government while kids like her needed research money more than ever. But cancer finally had its way.

The 10-year old from Waldorf was remembered Tuesday as a "Warrior Princess" who believed that love was the "only way" to solve conflicts between people.

Maddie died October 20th after suffering through six rounds of treatments since being diagnosed with Leukemia at age three.

Her life celebration service Tuesday at the Grace Lutheran Church and School turned out hundreds of Charles County residents who had supported Maddie and her family during her battles. People attending the service wore bright, happy colors to reflect Maddie's spirit and love of life. In lieu of flowers, her family asked people to make a donation to the Maddie Grace Memorial Scholarship Fund at Grace Lutheran Church and School.

"She had cancer and she had struggles but it never took away her joy," said family pastor Charles Long.

Cousin Kristen Qualters said mourners should carry on Maddie's legacy by continuing to advocate for more government funding for childhood cancer research.
