Prince George's County Animal Shelter reopening this Saturday

The shelter has been closed since January 4, when the illness began impacting dogs.

PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY, Md. — The Prince George’s County Animal Services Facility and Adoption Center will reopen its doors to the public on Saturday, January 20.

This marks ten days since the last emergence of symptoms reported due to a bacterial respiratory infection by the name of Streptococcus Zooepidemicus also referred to as Strep Zoo (pronounced “Zo”).

The shelter has been closed since January 4, when the illness began impacting dogs. Staff at ASFAC worked tirelessly to reduce the spread of the bacterial respiratory infection while simultaneously providing pet services to the community.

“We would not have been successful in our response and reopening without the valued guidance of our veterinarians and support of other animal service organizations in the local area and nationally,” said David Fisher, Associate Director of the Animal Services Division.

The dogs, who remain symptomatic and are receiving treatment, have been quarantined to specific rooms. There will be three rooms the public can access that will be symptom-free zones.

Those coming in for in-person adoption will only be allowed to interact with up to two dogs from those rooms.

Any animal on medical treatment will be sent home with the appropriate treatment. Should any dog adopted from the facility exhibit any symptoms of illness within seven days of adoption, they may be brought in for treatment.

Cat and small animal adoptions will also resume on Saturday per normal policies and without restriction. Volunteers will be allowed back into the facility beginning Saturday.
