Honor Flight provides trips for war heroes

WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- What an emotional day it was for a group of veterans from World War II and Korea who recently visited our nation’s capitol.

A non-profit called Honor Flight makes these trips possible whether by air or in this case, by bus.

WUSA9 Reporter Andrea McCarren, photojournalist Lee Jenkins and our service dog in training, Bunce, had the privilege of going along for the ride.

"I’m all excited from this experience," Joe Graziano, a veteran said. "I feel like a kid again."

An exhilarating visit that brought back vivid memories of misery and triumph.

Their adventure began at dawn in Philadelphia where step by cautious step, 138 veterans from World War II and the Korean War boarded buses bound for Washington.

"You treasure every day and happenings like this are really just super," said Veteran Bernard Spekter.

They made this journey for those who could not. Rolling past row upon row of white markers at Arlington National Cemetery.

I had a tear in my eyes and I felt appreciation," Graziano said.

Some wore the uniforms of their youth and the medals they earned for valor.

"Those of us that have been in combat, we have faced death together," said veteran George Shenkle.

The rain did not deter anyone.

The solemn changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier brought closure to some of the vets and a quiet grief in others.

The day was filled with emotion, including joy and at every stop, the veterans were treated like royalty.

In one memorable day, these brave men and women showed all of us what it means to serve.
