Man shot by police in Northeast DC identified, arrested

Police say shots were fired when members of MPD's robbery suppression unit tried to break up a fight.

WASHINGTON — The Metropolitan Police Department is investigating a shooting involving officers in Northeast D.C.

A call came into the police department at 9 p.m. Monday regarding the shooting in the 2100 block of Bladensburg Road.

The call was recorded. During the recorded phone call, a man can be heard saying that someone was "shot, shot in the back multiple times." This recording was provided to WUSA9 by OPENMHZ.com.

Police held a news conference Monday night to provide updates. Assistant Chief of the Homeland Security Bureau Leslie Parsons said the incident began when officers in the area noticed a group of men in an altercation.

These officers approached the men and attempted to break things up, Parsons said an armed man ran from the officers. The officers gave chase. In the area of Bladensburg Road and V Street an officer shot at the man. Parsons would only say the man was struck and that he was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. His injuries were later described as serious.

"These were members of our robbery suppression unit," Parsons said of the officers who tried to break up the fight. "They're tasked with doing exactly what we want them to do, and that's get illegal guns off the street, encounter folks that are bad actors in communities. They were doing exactly what they were asked to do tonight," Parsons said.

Police identified the man shot as 31-year-old Deion Hinnant of Northeast D.C. A preliminary investigation found Hinnant did not fire at officers before he was shot. However, investigators say he appeared to run toward them at one point, which is when officers opened fire.

Police say a firearm was found on the scene.
