WASHINGTON — The Metropolitan Police Department launched an operation aimed at curbing package theft and on Wednesday they announced an arrest had been made.
On January 31, the Fifth District’s Crime Suppression Team planted two decoy packages on the steps of someone’s home. Each package contained an Apple AirTag. Both packages had shipping labels and markings of a well-known business and were addressed to the Fifth District Commander.
Police claim just before 1:30 p.m., 59-year-old Gregory Fogle was walking along the 1500 block of Gales Street in Northeast and noticed the unattended packages. Fogle is accused of crossing onto private property, scooping both packages into a large bag, and walking away.
Officers assigned to the Crime Suppression Team tracked the AirTags and arrested Fogle.
MPD is reminding residents when having packages delivered to their homes, if possible bring them in as soon as possible. If you’re unable to, ask a family member or trusted neighbor to hold your package until you get back.
