DC firefighters respond to 'significant' gas leak in Northeast

Firefighters say a gas line was struck by a construction crew at New York Avenue and Florida Avenue Northeast.

WASHINGTON — A construction crew hit a high-pressure gas line in Northeast D.C. causing roads in the area to shut down. Firefighters were called to the area of New York Avenue and Florida Avenue Northeast around 11:15 a.m. for a report of a "significant" gas leak in the area.

Firefighters closed New York Avenue to traffic and were diverting drivers off of Florida Avenue Northeast while crews work to control the leak. Washington Gas utility crews are also on scene Thursday.

Preliminarily, firefighters on scene say a six-inch high pressure outside gas line was hit by a construction crew. Crews from DC Fire and Washington gas were forced to dig underground to gain access to the leak, causing significant delays.

It is not clear how long roads will be closed while the leak is fixed. Those who work nearby have been relocated, according to fire crews. No injuries have been reported as a result of the leak.
