Man climbs National Christmas tree in DC 4 days before Christmas

It is not known why the man climbed the tree or how he managed to do it.

Police had to negotiate with a man to come down from the National Christmas Tree in Washington, D.C. after he climbed it on Friday night.

U.S. Park Police confirmed that a man climbed 15-20 feet up the Christmas tree located in The Ellipse near the White House.

The man came down from the tree on his own around 6:55 p.m., according to police. He was transported to a local hospital for a mental health evaluation.

It is not known why the man climbed the tree or how he managed to do it.

A family who said they witnessed the man climbing the tree told WUSA9's Pete Muntean that the man was singing "God Bless America" at the top of his lungs.

The pageant area surrounding the National Christmas tree will remain closed for the rest of Friday night.

It is unclear if the man will face any charges.
