Farewell to a DC institution: Jenny's at the Wharf closes its doors

Jenny's at the Wharf survived two moves because of development, but could no longer afford to stay at a place they've called home for a decades.

WASHINGTON (WUSA9) — After 4 decades a long time DC restaurant is saying goodbye.

Jenny's at the Wharf has been in Southwest has survived 42 years and two moves but couldn't survive the latest move. Developers are preparing for phase 2 of the New Wharf and the price to stay was just too steep for this family restaurant.

"All good things must come to an end," said Joanne Liu the owners' daughter, "Southwest is our home and we hope to return one day."

Jenny and Henry Liu have supported the community since they established their business in the former Waterside Mall. "I used to come here before I moved to Southwest 30 years ago because I worked at the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) in the Waterside Mall," said regular Loren Hall.

"Jenny has always been the first to support us and the first to donate to the community," added Guy Shephard from Capital Yacht Club who served as Jenny's landlord for 17 years.

"To tell you the truth, I want to stay and work another 30 years," said Jenny who is known by many as DC grandma, "I love the people of Southwest."

The final service will be Saturday, June 30.
