DC Water impersonator scam alert

The DC Water and Sewer Authority is warning customers about a scam that is slowing making rounds in the District.

WASHINGTON -- If you are a DC Water customer, you could end up on the phone with an impersonator trying to get into your home.

The DC Water and Sewer Authority is warning customers about a scam that is slowing making rounds in the District.

Several customers have been getting calls saying a person from the utility company would be visiting their home to check on the quality of their water. It's fake.

The water company has not made any of these calls. WUSA9 reached out to DC Water Spokesperson Pamela Mooring who said the company would never contact homeowners to go inside their home. Technicians usually come out when a customer schedules an appointment.

She said customers should never give out any personal information or let anyone inside.

The company's website has a few tips on how to tell whether an employee is legit.

All employees will have patches on their uniforms with the DC Water logo. They also have a company photo ID card and drive marked vehicles with DC license plates.

If you get a suspicious call, you should report it to the DC Water Customer Service Department at 202.254.3600. If you're in danger, call 911.

Mooring said utility companies see an increase in scams during the summer months, including Pepco and Washington Gas.

So, be careful and exercise caution.
