Gen Z Congressman-Elect Maxwell Frost denied DC apartment

After Frost's tweets were posted, many commented to discuss how credit scores disproportionately hurt young people and people of color.

WASHINGTON — A lot of people have recently struggled to find a reasonably-priced place to live in D.C. but a congressman-elect's issue finding a place to live in the District may be a little surprising.

Maxwell Frost is the first member of Generation Z to take a seat at the Capitol.

Frost beat two former members of Congress in the primary and went on to win the general election for his Orlando-area district while driving Uber to pay the bills.

However, on Thursday Frost tweeted that he has recently been denied an apartment in D.C. due to bad credit. Not only did he lose the apartment, but he also lost the application fee.

"This is incredibly common," said Thomas Silverstein with Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights.

After Frost's tweets were posted, many commented to discuss how credit scores disproportionately hurt young people and people of color.

Many also claimed that some landlords collect fees from multiple applicants for a single apartment.

"There is a question of whether there may be fraud in that practice," Silverstein said.

WUSA9: "You're not saying this might have been fraud, but it does happen?"

Silverstein: "It does happen."

Angela Williams has a four-bedroom, three-bath townhouse in Petworth. She is offering it to Frost, no credit check required.

"I got a place for you," exclaimed Williams.

Frost's campaign manager told WUSA9 that a four-bedroom townhouse may be over his budget but Williams said she's willing to negotiate the $5,000 a month rent down if the congressman moves in with roommates.

"When he won, I was celebrating," said Williams. "I was celebrating."

Williams says having Frost in the townhouse would be a wonderful Christmas present for both of them.
