Bethesda house fire displaces family of 5

A total of three adults, two teens and a pet are believed to be without a home to go to Monday night.

BETHESDA, Md. — A family of five has been displaced after their home caught fire on Monday.

At 10 a.m., firefighters with the Montgomery County Fire Department responded to the 5800 block of Greenlawn Drive in Bethesda to fight the flames of a reported house fire. At the scene, firefighters noticed a two-story, single-family home up in flames, with heavy fire coming from the back of the home.

Crews were able to bring the flames under control shortly after arriving on the scene.

No one was injured as a result of the house fire, but a family consisting of likely three adults, two teens, and a pet were displaced.

Currently, there is no word on the cost of damages but a GoFundMe has been started to help the family. According to the fundraiser. The home belonged to Mary Maher, a beloved 3rd grade teacher at Green Acres School.

The fundraiser was started by a parent of a student of Mrs. Maher's.

"Today, more than ever, she and her family need the support of our community to shoulder the days ahead. To put it in the language of her truly magical 3rd-grade class, she will need more than a sprinkle of fairy dust to carry on in the days ahead," the organizer wrote.
