Frederick Co. Health Dept. warns of sewage overflows due to recent rainfall

Here's how to stay safe.

FREDERICK, Md. — Health officials are warning residents to avoid three areas of Frederick County due to sewage overflows.

The first location is on Mount St. Mary’s University campus on the east side of Rt. 15 in the waters from Saint Mary Run to Toms Creek to the Monocacy River. The second location is the Monocacy River from Rt 144 to Rt 80 or Fingerboard Rd, from Pinecliff Park to Buckeystown Park. The third affected area is from the Thurmont Wastewater Treatment Plant at 96 East Moser Rd in Thurmont into Big Hunting Creek to Blacks Mill Road.

The Frederick County Health Department says swimming or putting your whole body in affected waters should be avoided due to the sewage overflow.

"If a resident comes in contact with the affected water, they should wash thoroughly with soap and warm water, especially before eating," the health department said in a release.

Pet owners should also keep their pets away from these waters.

Boating and fishing is still permitted and fish may still be safe to consume if cleaned, scaled, and cooked.

Signs are posted in public access areas around the overflow. Waters should be avoided for two weeks, until April 18.
