WASHINGTON — Ascension Healthcare's system has been compromised. On Wednesday, WUSA9 received a tip that Ascension was experiencing a cyber security attack.
The viewer told WUSA9 that his wife had an appointment at an Ascension Healthcare facility in D.C., and upon arrival, they were reportedly told that all records were being kept on paper for the time being, due to the computer systems being down.
Ascension released a statement on Wednesday saying they “detected unusual activity on select technology network systems, which we now believe is due to a cyber security event.” The healthcare facility explained that they are investigating the attack.
They have procedures in place that allow them to continue to operate with as minimal disruptions or impact on patients as possible. At this time it is unknown if any sensitive information was stolen during the attack.
"We have engaged Mandiant, a third party expert, to assist in the investigation and remediation process, and we have notified the appropriate authorities," the statement reads. "Together, we are working to fully investigate what information, if any, may have been affected by the situation. Should we determine that any sensitive information was affected, we will notify and support those individuals in accordance with all relevant regulatory and legal guidelines."
There are currently 59 Ascension healthcare facilities in the D.C. area.
