Two major airports in our area are getting upgraded.
U.S. Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao announced Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport and Washington Dulles International both will see millions in funding from the FAA for improvements.
DCA is slated to get $4,921,500 in funding, while IAD is scheduled to get a total of $6,712,012.
The investment is part of the FAA’s Airport Improvement Program, which is awarding $3.18 billion in funding for 381 airports across the country.
Officials said the program’s purpose is to increase efficiency and safety at the airports.
The funding for Dulles is actually two different grants - $2,534,154 in entitlement, and $4,177,858 in discretionary grants. That means their capital project needs exceeded their available entitlement funds and the FAA supplemented it with the discretionary funds.
No word yet on what the planned construction will mean in terms of closures, but we’ll keep you posted.
