School bus carrying students overturns along Old Columbia Road

Several Hammond Middle School students were injured in the crash.

COLUMBIA, Md. — Several students from Hammond Middle School are being evaluated for injuries after a school bus crash in Columbia.

A call came in just after 3:30 p.m. for a bus that had overturned. Howard County Police and Fire and EMS responded to the location of the crash in the 7300 block of Old Columbia Road.

In a press conference held by Howard County, officials said the bus was carrying 19 students ranging between the ages of 11 and 14.

Four of the students were taken to Johns Hopkins Children's Center after reporting that they were experiencing back pain and head injuries. Officials do not believe the injuries they sustained were life-threatening. The remaining students were treated at the scene by EMS.

Parents were contacted by the county regarding the accident. Students were released to their families as they arrived at the scene to pick them up.

The driver is said to be okay and did not sustain any injuries. Investigators do not believe she was impaired during the time of the accident. Police say, the 31-year-old driver is familiar with the route, stating it is the normal route home for those students.

The investigation into the crash is ongoing as police work to determine the cause of the crash. Sherry Llewellyn with the Howard County police department says she believes the driver will receive some sort of citation at the end of the investigation.
