'I think it’s shameful' | Students respond to GWU President's letter calling the protests 'unlawful'

Student organizers told WUSA9 they requested a meeting with President Granberg multiple times and she declined.

WASHINGTON — Students are responding to a letter from George Washington University President Ellen Granberg, saying they are prepared to continue their pro-Palestine protest until their demands are met.

On Monday, students responded to the letter sent to students and faculty on Sunday, addressing the continued protests, which she called ‘unlawful.’

Student organizers told WUSA9 they requested a meeting with President Granberg multiple times and she declined.

“Two words, deeply misleading. She claims she has tried to make dialogue with us and that could not be further from the truth. She has continually ignored us, to meet with us and officially declined our meeting request,” Lela Tolhaian said.

Despite a possible ceasefire deal. Students continue asking the president for several demands, including:

  • Divesting from corporations involved with the ongoing war in Gaza
  • Making all investments transparent
  • Protecting pro-Palestinian speech on campus
  • Dropping charges against pro-Palestinian protesters

“I think she should absolutely resign. I think it’s shameful. All we are asking is for her to come to the table, have a discussion and figure out how we can meet these demands,” Tolhaian said.

The university's commencement is scheduled for May 19. Students told WUSA9 they are prepared to protest until summer or until their demands are met.
