3-year-old girl shot to death in Southeast DC

Police say the shooting happened near 24th and Irving Street, Southeast around 9:15 p.m.

WASHINGTON — Police are investigating a shooting that left a 3-year-old girl dead in Southeast D.C. Friday night.

According to Tom Lynch, a spokesperson with the Metropolitan Police Department, the shooting happened along Hartford Street where officers found multiple shell casings. The child was brought to a firehouse near 24th and Irving Street, Southeast around 9:15 p.m.

An MPD source has confirmed to WUSA9 that the toddler was critically wounded in the shooting. The toddler was taken to an area hospital by helicopter. In a press conference around 11:15 p.m., MPD officials announced that the 3-year-old girl has since died. 

Very little is known about the circumstances surrounding the shooting at this time, including suspect description. There is no word on any possible motive or what may have happened in the moments leading up to the shooting.
