Person of interest presented to grand jury in connection to deadly punch outside DC restaurant

The Alcoholic Beverage and Cannabis Board reviewed Akedo's liquor license & whether its security contributed to the assault and found Akedo was not responsible.

WASHINGTON — A grand jury will decide whether or not a man will face charges in connection to the death of 41-year-old Vivek Taneja, who died after being punched outside a D.C. restaurant in February

The fight happened outside a restaurant on 15th Street, Northwest on Feb. 2. Investigators say they found Taneja on the pavement around 2 a.m. He was taken to an area hospital, where he died

Early in the investigation, detectives said Taneja and an unidentified man were arguing before Taneja was punched. He was knocked to the ground and hit his head on the pavement. He died six days later.

Three months after the fight, WUSA9 learned the case has been presented to a grand jury. A DC Police Lieutenant testifying before the Alcoholic Beverage and Cannabis Board revealed that police have a person of interest and "the case is in front of a grand jury." That person of interest has not been identified to the public.

Additionally, the restaurant the assault happened outside of has been found not responsible for the attack after DC Police recommended The Alcoholic Beverage and Cannabis Board review Akedo's liquor license and whether its security contributed to the assault.

Akedo's manager testified before the ABC Board that both the suspect and victim were inside the restaurant earlier that night. Managers told WUSA9 in February that according to the surveillance video they reviewed, the two never had any interaction inside the bar and that they left separately more than 10 minutes apart.

Alcoholic Beverage and Cannabis Board investigators recommended Akedo widen the view of its security cameras.
