SILVER SPRING, Md. — Global International Grocery is boarded up, but it is open for business. However, the owner wants to see something done after Montgomery County Police said suspects rammed their car through the front of the business and made off with an ATM and two cash registers.
“They drove full speed from the street to here three times," said Francis Addai, the owner of Global International Grocery. He's had this store on New Hampshire Avenue in the Hillandale corridor of Silver Spring for over a decade.
He said the suspects rammed the front of his store multiple times with the back of their car, before taking off on New Hampshire Avenue.
"We’ve been here 14 years, never seen anything like that," said Addai.
“I’m just, I don’t know, it frustrates me," said Jeremiah Pope, the President of the Hillendale Citizens Association. “I’m so frustrated that this crime continues to happen over and over and over again, and the county continues to say there’s no crime, nothing is happening, saying everything is ok.”
Pope said the Montgomery County’s Façade program, which improves the aesthetic of commercial business buildings, invested in Global International Grocery.
“It’s unfortunate that the county spent so much money and the small business owner who owns this shopping plaza spent money to make it look better and then bam, not even six months. Here we go," he said.
"The county should try to take care of the area, especially for such things, because they just finished this building," said Addai.
Addai is hoping if police make an arrest, it sends criminals message.
“Once they get them, I know they can take them off the streets, so this doesn’t happen to the next person or even to me again," he said.
