'They began shooting into the crowd' | 6 people shot, including 2 children in Northeast DC

A 9-year-old and 12-year-old are among the victims.

WASHINGTON — Police are investigating a shooting in D.C. that left one man dead and multiple people wounded Wednesday evening, including two children.

According to a spokesperson with the Metropolitan Police Department, the shooting happened in the 1100 block of 21st Street, in the Carver Langston neighborhood in Northeast shortly before 6:15 p.m.

In a press conference Wednesday night, Police Chief Pamela A. Smith said that a man was killed in the shooting and four others were wounded. She says they were found in multiple locations by responding officers.

Police later identified the man killed as 29-year-old Aubrey McLeod of Largo, Maryland.

The four surviving victims, including a 9-year-old, were taken to area hospitals for help and are expected to survive.

Following the shooting, a 12-year-old boy walked into an area hospital with a gunshot wound. He is believed to be a victim in the same shooting. Police say he is expected to survive.

Smith says the suspects got out of a car and opened fire on people outside in the neighborhood.

"The suspects exited a vehicle and began shooting at people who were outside in the neighborhood. Our real-time crime center began investigating and provided images from cameras in the area to aid in the investigation," said Chief Smith

MPD released pictures of the car they believe to be connected to the shooting, which is described as a light blue Toyota sedan with no tags at the front, dark tints, and black rims.  Investigators believe the two shooters may be riding in the vehicle, which was last seen traveling eastbound on Maryland Avenue Northeast.

"This is another example and I've been here before of violence we can not accept in our communities," said Chief Smith.

Anyone with information may contact detectives at (202) 727-9099 or text the department's tip line at 50411.

This is the fourth shooting in D.C. this week to leave multiple people wounded at once.

"We are working tirelessly to really help remove some of these illegal guns that are on our streets, we're working with our ATFs, we're working with some of our task force," Smith explained when asked about the string of shootings. "What we're seeing is an increase in guns in the District and we're doing everything we can to ensure we're removing those guns off of our streets."
