Mom charged after elementary student brings gun to school in Alexandria

Alexa Dickens, 31, has been charged with allowing access to firearms by children, a class 1 misdemeanor.

ALEXANDRIA, Va. — The mother of an elementary school student is facing charges after her child reportedly brought a loaded gun to school in Alexandria last month.

According to the Alexandria Police Department, the child brought the weapon to Lyles-Crouch Traditional Academy on March 1. Investigators say the elementary school student had the loaded gun in a book bag. Staff became aware of the weapon after the student told a teacher they had the gun.

Police say, the teacher immediately took the book bag and notified school administrators, who called the police. No injuries were reported.

Investigators told WUSA9 in March that the student brought the gun to class accidentally. Police say, the child grabbed the wrong backpack on the way out the door and it happened to contain the loaded gun.

On April 5, Alexandria Police announced the arrest of the child's mother. Alexa Dickens, 31, has been charged with allowing access to firearms by children, a class 1 misdemeanor.
