Deputies say a man killed his estranged wife in a Maryland grocery store parking lot

The deadly shooting happened Saturday night outside a Giant in Urbana, Maryland. 33-year-old Frederick Owusu Sakyi was arrested in connection with the shooting.

URBANA, Md. — The Frederick County Sheriff's Office is investigating a deadly shooting in the parking lot of an Urbana grocery store. Deputies say a woman was killed by her estranged husband Saturday night outside of the grocery store where she worked.

At approximately 11:11 p.m. on Saturday, Frederick County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the Giant grocery store located at 3530 Sugarloaf Parkway for reports of a shooting.

According to investigators, the victim was identified as 33-year-old Tenisha Butler. Butler was pronounced dead at the scene. Deputies say after a brief search for a suspect, they arrested Frederick Owusu Sakyi, the victim's estranged husband.

The sheriff's office tells WUSA9 Butler and Owusu Sakyi were currently going through divorce proceedings. There is also a history of protective orders and stalking by Sakyi.

A search of recent court records shows the suspect was ordered on multiple occasions by the court system to surrender all firearms as a result of temporary protection orders.

Owusu Sakyi was arrested a few hours after the incident and transported to the Frederick County Adult Detention Center for booking. Deputies say they found a handgun on the front seat and an assault rifle on the back seat of his car at the time of his arrest.

The Urbana shopping center where the Giant is located was closed, but is now back open to the public.
