WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- Girls in India who once had no chance for an education will be taking part in a spelling bee, thanks to the work of the Sahasra Deepika Institute.

Sarva Rajendra, the school's president, joined WUSA9 Friday.

Sahasra Deepika, which means a thousand lights, is a non-profit foundation that houses and educates underprivileged children in Bangalore, India.

The school's English tutoring program has reached approximately 2,900 students this year, and 10,000 students in the past five years. It culminates in a spelling bee, which is taking place on January 24.
