Capital Pride's new parade route skips historic Dupont

The parade is anticipated to begin at 14th and T Streets NW and end at Pennsylvania Avenue and 9th Streets NW.

WASHINGTON — D.C.'s Capital Pride Alliance has unveiled the route for the 2024 Pride parade. This year's route is new for 2024 and will not be going through the historic Dupont neighborhood, according to organizers. The parade route is subject to change.

The parade is happening on June 8 from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. It is anticipated to begin at 14th and T Streets NW and end at Pennsylvania Avenue and 9th Streets NW. While the parade itself will be skipping Dupont this year, the Capital Pride Block Party will still be held there. The exact location has not been announced.

Organizers told WUSA9 the new route is a "test run" in preparation for WorldPride in 2025, which will be held in the District. The parade crowd of spectators and participants has grown to about 150,000 to 200,000 last year, according to Capital Pride Alliance marketing and media manager Marquia Parnell. Parnell told WUSA9 that Capital Pride Alliance expects the number of attendees to increase next year.

This year, the parade will end with a "Tea Dance" that will take place on Constitution Ave NW and 6th Street NW.

This year's theme is "Totally Radical."  Back in February, Capital Pride announced the new theme saying "During the 1980s and 1990s our community showed up, spoke up, ACTed up and created a TOTALLY RADICAL America."

A longer route

The 2023 route took the parade down 14th Street NW, but then turned onto Rhode Island Ave NW, onto Massachusetts Ave NW, turned onto 17th St NW, eventually onto P St NW and Dupont Circle. The 2023 parade route was approximately 1.43 miles.

The new 2024 route down 14th Street NW and then onto Pennsylvania Ave is approximately 1.81 miles.

An international affair

The District is already planning for 2025, when it will host WorldPride for the first time. The event has been held in various cities around the world since 2000. In 2022 Interpride announced that D.C. would be the 2025 host city for the event. The 2025 WorldPride will also coincide with the 50th anniversary of Pride celebrations in the District. The last WorldPride was in Sydney, Australia in 2023. WorldPride 2026 will be held in Amsterdam. The only other U.S. city to host the event was New York in 2019.
