Pillow-making project for cancer survivors | Get Uplifted

To date, the women have created over 1,000 pillows during their Wednesday sewing sessions.

WOODBRIDGE, Va. — A group of women in northern Virginia has been uplifting people with their sewing talents for almost a decade.

Volunteers with the Woodbridge Woman's Club get together twice a month at the Sentara Cancer Network Resource Center at Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center to craft heart shaped pillows and other comfort items for cancer and surgery patients.

The award-winning health and wellness pillow-making project started as a service project to support people diagnosed with cancer. The heart shape of the pillows is meant to serve as a reminder that patients are loved and supported by the community.

To date, the women have created over 1,000 pillows during their Wednesday sewing sessions. What makes the pillows even more special is that the fabric used to make them is donated by the community.

And while the pillows were originally given to breast cancer patients, now they are given to folks dealing with all different types of the disease.
