First Black person to join Woodmore Country Club recognized | Get Uplifted

After being a member for more than 32 years, Howard says the biggest change he's seen is the number of African-Americans getting involved in golf.

WOODMORE, Md. — A man in Prince George's County is making history, and his name is Theodore Howard.

He's 87 years old and is the first Black person to ever join The Country Club at Woodmore. It's a private golf club that Howard joined back in 1992.

At that time, in order to become a member you had to have someone sponsor you. Howard was sponsored by the former county executive Winfield Kelly, Jr.

Howard says he's honored to be a part of history. "I'm very proud that I was able to become a Black member here and bring other Black members forward. So I'm very happy and excited about that."

After being a member for more than 32 years, Howard says the biggest change he's seen is the number of African-Americans getting involved in golf.
