Washington, DC (WUSA9) — Whether you're spending Halloween taking the kids trick-or-treating or hosting a party, it's important to keep your pets safe on this holiday. Here are tips from Friendship Hospital for Animals to stop anything spooky from happening.
- Lock up the candy. Your kids may beg you to put that trick-or-treating stash in the candy bowl, but it's best if you have pets to keep the goodies locked up. If your dog gets into chocolate, sugar free candy, or anything with raisins, contact your veterinarian immediately.
- Don't leave glow sticks lying around. If you have glow sticks for trick-or-treating at night with the kids, keep them safely hidden when not in use. Animal Poison Control has gotten many panicked calls from people whose pets have ingested the liquid in the sticks. While most are labeled non-toxic, the liquid has a bitter taste that can upset your pets. If one of them takes a bite, give them a treat immediately after to mask the taste.
- Test the costumes. If you want to dress up your pet for Halloween, try out the costume before the big day. Make sure your cat or dog can still walk around easily, and it won't be a choking hazard if chewed. Never leave a costumed pet unattended.
- Make sure your pet is easily identified. After testing the costume, but make sure it doesn't obscure any tags. If your dog gets separated from the trick-or-treating pack, you want to make sure he/she can be easily returned. Reflective collars are also a great idea for being out at night.
