4 Metro stops that should be named differently

D.C. Metro officially began 42 years ago in the Spring of 1976, and in honor of that, WETA's "Boundary Stones" blog has created an interactive digital map gives new names to each stop based on history.

The DC metro is turning 42-years-old this year, having started it's service in the spring of 1976. While folks in the region have a love-hate relationship with metro, maybe we should stop beating up on it and celebrate the transit system's birthday.

The new WETA blog and interactive map called "Boundary Stones" does just that. The editor, Mark Jones has lived in the DMV since he was three-years-old and shared these four "new" names for stops based on history:

Doors Opening

Instead of Braddock Rd, the Boundary Stones blog names the stop in Alexandria, Va "Doors Opening" in honor of Jim Morrison, lead singer of the iconic rock band "The Doors". Morrison went to high school around the corner at what is now George Washington Middle School.

Muppet High

Muppet High refers to the famous puppeteer Jim Henson. He went to Northwestern High School near the Prince George's Plaza metro stop. In addition to Jim Henson, Northwestern High produced famous basketball player Len Bias and guitarist John Fahey.

Murder Bay

Instead of Metro Center, the Boundary Stones blog chose Murder Bay. Here's why: it was the name of a 19th century red light district in the center of the nation's capital.

Meowtro's End

In honor of the end of the metro line and the pet cemetery nearby, the Glenmont stop was renamed Meowtro's end. The Aspen Hill pet cemetery nearby is home to over 50,000 deceased animals and has been around for almost 100 years.
