Eyewitness says suspect fired on officers in final confrontation

The suspect was killed when police returned fire.

The suspect in the murder of a Prince George’s County Police officer fired on pursuing police after being intercepted at the intersection of Indian Head Highway and Old Fort Road, according to an eyewitness.

The suspect, identified as 37-year-old Glenn Tyndell, was killed when police returned fire.

“While I was sitting there there was one shot back towards us,” said Robert Hayden who said he was stopped at the intersection when police converged on the suspect driving a black SUV. “And the police, they start shooting toward the woods,” Hayden said.

The suspect jumped out of his vehicle stopped in the left turn lane of northbound Md. Rt. 210 and leaped a median guard rail as he fled toward thick brush on the west side of the road when the shooting broke out Hayden said.

“I ducked down in my car because I didn’t know if there were going to be two-way bullets,” said the badly shaken man.

Witness Carnell Smith said he was on Rt. 210 ending his shift as an Uber driver when he was surrounded by police vehicles coming from “every direction” to intercept the suspect.

“They just started blasting,” Smith said.

In the wake of the shooting, the suspect’s black SUV could be seen immediately surrounded by at least five police vehicles that appeared to have blocked the SUV to stop the suspect’s progress.

In addition to Prince George’s County officers, several police vehicles from neighboring Charles County were also at the scene of the final confrontation.
