Howard University student sit-in continues

Howard University students continue to protest administrators two days after an embezzlement scandal was revealed on-campus.

WASHINGTON (WUSA9) — Howard University students continue to protest administrators two days after an embezzlement scandal was revealed on-campus.

As of Friday afternoon, students still occupied the Administration Building on 6th Street. Students have held a sit-in on multiple levels of the building since around 2pm Thursday.

Students are holding the sit-in of most of the floors in the building. Campus police are also present, but there has been little interaction between the two groups.

WUSA9 learned on Wednesday that six Howard University employees were fired for misappropriation of University-provided financial aid funds.

According to a statement from President of Howard University Wayne Frederick, an outside auditor found that between 2007 and 2016, several university employees were given grants and also tuition remission that equaled more than the cost of the university.

HU Resist organized the protest at the Administration Building. They have multiple requests. They want administrators to disarm campus police. They demand an end to what they call unsubstantiated tuition hikes. They would also like for a new president to replace Wayne Frederick.

The group told WUSA9 it plans to stay in the building overnight until its demands are met. Students have sleeping bags and blow up mattresses.

WUSA9 reached out to Frederick by phone Thursday night. The president immediately hung up.
