A D.C. Council staffer says Council member Vincent Orange is resigning from his position after he was criticized for conflicts of interest with his new job.

Orange, a Democrat, accepted a job last week as president of the D.C. Chamber of Commerce.

Several Council members said it presented a conflict of interest for Orange to serve as the business community's chief advocate. Orange lost his bid for re-election in a June primary.

A Council staffer briefed on the matter says Orange tendered his resignation on Friday, effective Aug. 15.

The staffer spoke on condition of anonymity because the person was not authorized to release the information. Orange met Friday with Council chairman Phil Mendelson.

Calls to both men's cellphones were met with a recording saying they weren't accepting calls.
