ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) -- The Maryland Senate has given preliminary approval to banning the sending of text messages while driving.
The measure would create a maximum $500 fine for violations.
Supporters shot down an amendment Friday that would have made it a secondary offense. That means police would not have been able to pull someone over and issue a citation only for sending a text while driving.
The current bill would allow police to pull someone over if they see a driver sending texts.
They also rejected an amendment that would have enabled police to pull someone over, but not issue a monetary fine.
