WASHINGTON, DC (WUSA) -- Leon Swain, the Chairman of the DC Taxi Commission, was reluctant to talk about it. In fact it wasn't until after the Mayor's office okayed the interview, that Swain confirmed in front of our 9NEWS NOW camera on Tuesday afternoon that he packs a gun to work every day, under his suit jacket.
It's a Glock Nine millimeter, the same weapon that's carried by DC Police officers on the streets.
Swain isn't breaking the law. He's a retired DC Police officer. It turns out that both federal and DC law allow about 500 retired cops to carry concealed weapons, provided they have the proper permit from Metropolitan Police headquarters.
Swain is the only city official who admits to packing a gun.
It comes as a surprise to DC Councilmembers who helped pass one of the toughest gun bans in the country. A ban that has seen it's major provision struck down by the courts. The case is now before the U.S. Supreme court.
