WASHINGTON, DC (WUSA) -- Victor Kolako, the driver of a Metrobus that struck two female pedestrians last February, has pleaded guilty to two counts of negligent vehicular homicide.
Martha Schoenborn, 59, and her close friend Sally McGhee, 54, were mowed down by the bus as they crossed the street at 7th & Pennsylvania Ave., Northwest on the evening of February 14th.
Kolako faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison. Federal prosecutors have agreed to recommend three years.
However, Martha Schoenborn's widower, Greg, tells 9NEWS NOW, "I don't want him to go to jail. I don't think that's going to fix anything."
The accident was captured on videotape by a security camera positioned near the roof of the National Archives. Obtained by 9NEWS NOW and broadcast on July 20th, the tape recording clearly showed the bus make a sweeping left hand turn in front of on-coming traffic and into the intersection where the two women were crossing the street with the green light.
Greg Schoenborn has filed a $50 million civil suit against Metro that claims negligent driving is "part of a culture."
Victor Kolako's sentencing is scheduled for December 5th.
