Washington, DC (WUSA) -- It's not just us humans that are suffering in this cold spell.
An unusual rescue took place Monday afternoon down on the Tidal Basin, involving personnel from US Park Police, DC Fire and EMS, and DC Animal Control.
A Park Police SWAT officer, Michael Ocetnik, was at the Jefferson Memorial and saw a seagull floundering in the Tidal Basin. He investigated and found that the seagull was frozen in the icy waters, so he called DC Fire and EMS.
They sent a team from the DC fire boat into the Tidal Basin and rescued the bird.
The seagull was still alive, although encrusted with ice. They turned him over to DC animal control. He has since been released.
