WASHINGTON, DC (WUSA) -- Students at Georgetown University are outraged over three alleged hate crimes aimed at gay and lesbian students.
"It's like they are trying to push us back into the closet and we refuse," said Ellen Greer, a college junior and member of GU Pride.
"We will not tolerate members of the LGBTQ [Lesbian Gay Bi-Sexual Transgender Queer/Questioning] Community and more importantly of the Georgetown community being assaulted. We simply won't," she said.
According to police, the first incident happened last October 28, at 9:10 p.m. along Canal Street. Police say two males physically assaulted a student wearing a gay rights shirt.
Police describe the suspects as two white males in their late twenties, 6-feet tall, and both weigh about 170 pounds. One wore blue jeans, a blue jacket, white shirt and a New York Yankees baseball cap. The second wore blue jeans, a brown jacket, a dark blue shirt and a baseball cap.
At 1 :32 a.m. on November 1, police say another male approached a student near 36th and N Streets, NW. The suspect asked the victim several times, "Are you a homo," and then assaulted the victim. The victim was treated at the hospital.
Police say the suspect is a white male, 6'2" tall, and wore red and white face paint and a black leather jacket.
Georgetown University officials e-mailed students about the incidents and about another that happened Monday. According to the e-mail, a written slur was posted to the door of the LGBTQ Resource Center.
The District's Gay and Lesbian Liaison Unit are helping handle the cases.
"The Gay and Lesbian Liaison Unit will be providing patrols in the area. We are also working with the public safety and the community groups," said Sgt. Carlos Mejia.
