WASHINGTON DC (WUSA) - There is a cherished recipe Fabio Salvatore keeps from his days growing up in Italy...his grandmother's homemade pasta.
The executive chef at Cafe Milano in Georgetown will be busting out the classic dish for Pope Benedict XVI on Wednesday. The pontiff is turning 81 and the local restaurant has been chosen to make his birthday lunch.
"We know what he likes and what he doesn't like," said Salvatore. "We are for sure going to do Italian food with a little bit of regional and creative menu."
But that's pretty much the only part of the full menu staff will reveal. They have remained tight-lipped about the preparations ever since Cafe Milano's Owner Franco Nuschese discovered they were chosen to cook for the pope.
"We are so honored," said Nuschese in a recent interview with 9 NEWS NOW. "When I told everyone here in the beginning they were skeptical. Once they knew I was for sure, everybody was excited about it and of course there a small amount of anxiety."
They've studied up on Pope Benedict's favorite dishes, among them chocolate. Salvatore says he's also staying away from mushrooms, the pontiff does not like them at all.
"It's a little bit of pressure...but also a lot more than pressure. It's excitement and we're just get ready to go."
