The George Washington University Medical Center, GW Medical
Faculty Associates and the Cancer Research and Prevention Foundation
introduce a new, state-of-the-art “Mammovan” to provide
breast cancer screenings at locations throughout the region. The brand
new vehicle, with updated features and new technology, takes the place
of GW’s original Mammovan, which hit the streets in 1996 and
has screened nearly 19,000 women in the greater Washington Metropolitan
Region.
GW’s Mobile Mammography program is
the first and only such program in the DC area. Accredited by the
American College of Radiology, the program provides state-of-the-art,
digital mammography screenings to women in the District of Columbia,
Maryland and Northern Virginia. The program has screened nearly
19,000 people in the region since its inception and more than 71
women have been diagnosed with breast cancer on the Mammovan. Most
of these cancers were discovered in the very early stages of the
disease. Women diagnosed on the van receive all necessary treatment
and follow-up, regardless of whether they have health insurance
or their ability to pay for treatment. Breast cancer is the second
leading cause of cancer death for women in the United States. Today,
63 percent of breast cancers are found when they are localized and
have not yet spread beyond the breast. When detected and treated
in these early stages, the five year survival rate is more than
97 percent.
