Red paint splashed on Lincoln Memorial steps

US Park Police say cleaning up the paint could take several days.

WASHINGTON — Someone dumped red paint on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial and around the Reflecting Pool area in D.C. United States Park Police are investigating the vandalism, and ask anyone with information to contact them.

National Park Service conservators have begun the process of removing the paint from the steps, but authorities say the process could take multiple treatments over several days. The steps on the west side of the Reflecting Pool will be closed until further notice while the clean-up work is underway.

It is not clear why the steps were vandalized, but our WUSA9 camera crews noticed the word "Gaza" painted on the steps. Park Police are asking anyone who may have information about the vandalism to contact them via tip line at 202-379-4877 or email uspp_tipline@nps.gov.
